Whether you're a seasoned HVAC pro or just stepping into the trade, your tools are everything. They're not just a part of the job—they are the job. When you're out in the field installing systems, troubleshooting breakdowns, or doing maintenance, the last thing you want is to be caught without the right tool.
So, what should be in every HVAC technician’s toolbox? Let’s break it down into the must-haves—tools that will have your back no matter the task, from basic hand tools to power tools like Milwaukee and DeWalt impact drivers. I've included links throughout that will take you to the tools I use on a daily basis.
Core Hand Tools: Built for Daily Use
These are the bread and butter of HVAC work. You’ll use them constantly, so invest in good ones.
Crimpers – 5 blade crimper is essential for sealing round ductwork connections tight and secure.
Tin Snips – Left, right, and straight-cut snips for slicing through sheet metal like butter.
Hand Seamers – Both straight and offset help shape, bend, and flatten metal edges for clean ductwork.
Screwdrivers – A good insulated set and a multi-bit 6-in-1 or 11-in-1 are lifesavers.
Tape Measure – Don’t skimp here. A sturdy 25’ tape is standard.
Level – A magnetic torpedo level keeps installs and mounts looking clean and professional.
Wrenches – From flare fittings to gas piping, you'll need both an adjustable wrench and pipe wrench.
Wire Strippers & Cutters – Wire strippers are a must for wiring control boards or thermostats.
Allen Wrenches – Allen wrenches aren't needed often but you'll be glad you picked up a set.
Power Tools: When Manual Just Doesn’t Cut It
Power tools make the tough jobs easier—and faster. If you’re serious about HVAC, you need a few go-to cordless tools. Whether you go with DeWalt or Milwaukee you will have zero issues getting the job done fast and efficiently as long as you get these few power tools.
Drill/Impact Driver Combo – The best bang for you buck! Milwaukee or DeWalt both come with a hammer drill, impact driver, 2 5ah batteries, a charger, and a case.
Impact bit set - A reversible 1/4 - 5/16 bit with a magnet helps hold zip screws while securing duct
Reciprocating Saw (Sawzall) – Whether you’re cutting through metal duct, drywall, or old units—this is your demolition bestie. Both kits come with the tool, a charger, and a case but the Milwaukee kit comes with 2 5ah batteries and the DeWalt kit comes with 1 5ah power stack battery
Don’t overlook the small stuff—it can make a big difference in how fast and safe you work.
Work Light – Headlamps are great keeping your hands free in those pitch-black attics, basements, and crawlspaces.
Tool Bag or Backpack – Milwaukee, Veto Pro Pac, or Klein make top-tier bags.
Gloves – After cutting duct it can be really sharp gloves are a must! I get them in bulk so no matter what I'm prepared
Below are some future tools that will be needed to be successful. Most HVAC companies will have these more specialty tools. My rule of thumb has always been, if you have borrow something more than three times then it's time to start looking at buying that tool for yourself.
Manifold Gauge Set – Choose analog or digital, just make sure it’s accurate.
Micron Gauge – You must confirm a deep vacuum during system evacuations.
Vacuum Pump – Aim for a 5+ CFM model for residential and light commercial.
Refrigerant Scale – For charging systems precisely and legally.
Leak Detector – Save time (and refrigerant) with an electronic sniffer.
Thermometer or Temperature Probes – Know your supply/return temps to diagnose and tune systems.
Recovery Machine – Required for EPA-compliant refrigerant recovery.
In HVAC, showing up with the right tools means faster installs, better diagnostics, safer work, and more confidence in your craft. Start with the basics, invest in quality, and upgrade your kit as your skills and experience grow.
Whether you're repping Milwaukee red or DeWalt yellow, make sure your tools work as hard as you do.
